resources for STUDENTS
The Museum has developed resources to support teachers, parents/guardians, and students learning at home and in the classroom.
These curriculum-linked education packages, available for download in PDF format, use a selection of the museum’s artifacts along with printable worksheets, suggested lesson plans, and an overview of background material for the teachers. Some of the activities are tailored for certain ages/grades, but they can be adapted to a range of ages and abilities.
Students will read an 1892 newspaper description of Almonte and answer questions about the article, using history to practice critical thinking and media literacy.
Students will watch a 20-minute video showing three oral history interviews from people who worked in the Appleton Woollen Mill as teenagers. They will study Appleton’s industrial history, learn to consider real-life stories as historical narrative, and discuss how life in Lanark has changed since the mid-20th Century.
By examining primary source documents and photos, students will learn about one of Lanark’s pioneer women in science and study the dyeing process used in textile mills as an example of global interconnectedness in 19th century Mississippi Mills.
Students use maps of Appleton from different eras to assess continuity and change in a geographic region.
Students will examine a collection of job applications from the 1880s. Worksheets and discussion questions will encourage students to practice working with and thinking critically about primary source documents.
Students will make paper pinwheels to model how 19th century communities used the Mississippi River to power factories and develop industry in Mississippi Mills.
